To urge or not to urge. Comunicatul Departamentului de Stat american: o analiză pe text 4.77/5 (11)

On November 27 this year, the US Department of State issued a press statement expressing concerns on the intention of the Romanian Parliament to change the so-called “justice laws”, currently under debate in a special commission.  The Romanian officials (i.e. Liviu Dragnea, President of the Chamber of Deputies and Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, President of the Senate) immediately responded with a communiqué (engaging the entire Romanian Parliament, although it was not voted in a common session of the MPs). A troublesome debate in the public space has been related to the verb “to urge”, used by the US DoS, which was translated and interpreted in various ways, thus raising the issue of the USA’s interference with Romania’s sovereignty.

Context

Recenta declaraţie de presă (press statement[1], în original) a Departamentului de Stat american, vizând îngrijorările SUA cu privire la preconizatele modificări ale legilor justiţiei, aflate pe masa Parlamentului român, a stârnit multă vâlvă în spaţiul public românesc, generând reacţii de îngrijorare legate de un presupus “amestec în treburile interne” ale României, de o presupusă “vasalitate” a acesteia faţă de SUA.
